A rough run to Staten Island

Great Kills Yacht Club, we enjoyed many a drink and even more laughs!
We traveled about 90 miles to Staten Island. Our long run was great for the first three quarters of the trip. Then the waves became larger than called for, and the wind picked up making for a lumpy ride. We were tired and really ready to get off the boat. We found ourselves at a little private yacht club in a town called Great Kills, NY. We spent several days here waiting for Liz and Bob's son to arrive before we take the boats past the Statue of Liberty.

Staten Island was full of life. One third of the population of Staten Island is Italian and we enjoyed the influence on the food! There are more Italians living here than in any other county in the United States. The yacht club (Great Kills Yacht Club) we stayed at was run by a group of men who volunteer their time doing different tasks keeping the club, bar and the grounds running. The marina is full and only offers several slips for transients. Everyone here made us feel like we were part of the club. We met some really wonderful people and even had a special gift of a loaf of Lithuanian bread (Thanks Steve and Jeannie!) left for us on our boat!
Not only was the yacht club enjoyable but the town was full of food! We found a local diner that had everything and anything you could want...all of it very good. The local mom and pop Italian market, Frank and Sal's, was beyond amazing! Ben bought some dry-aged beef, pork chops (that were the best I've eaten!) and some Italian sausage that was addicting. I found myself in the cookie aisle and was not disappointed! We made several stops here!

One thing I loved was listening to the accent here, very New York! Ben was annoyed with my interpretations...I thought I sounded good!

Great Kills Yacht Club Bar, we closed the place down several nights. Thankfully Tommy, the bartender, only volunteered his time until 8pm!
