Bashi Creek |
We left Demopolis well before 7:00am...ugh! I wish I liked mornings!
We had 71 miles to run to our next anchorage called Bashi Creek. This anchorage is located by a public use area, meaning we can easily get the dogs to shore. Basically, we chose this for the dogs!
Our ride started out great, until the fog decided to give us a mere 250 feet of visibility. Scary!!! Not only were we traveling in unfamiliar water but this water has a fair amount of large tree stumps/deadheads we need to be looking out for. Trying to keep calm, I chose to try knitting...big mistake! Being a newbie knitter, I messed up and had no idea how to fix the mess-up. Darn! Had to put that away! So, I sat next to Ben and tried to act normal...he figured me out right away. Poor guy, he spent his time driving in the fog, looking out for debris and making sure I knew we were safe. Thankfully, an hour later the fog lifted and life on our boat was back to normal!
The rest of the ride was great and the weather decided to become gorgeous, the sun came out and we were able to shed a layer of clothes. Upon our approach to Bashi Creek, I couldn't help but think this is the skinniest anchorage I've seen. Yet the most beautiful one to boot! We were the first boat in and being courteous boaters we went further in to allow room for the several boats that were still behind us. Well, as we were deciding the perfect spot to drop the hook (drop our anchor) we felt the boat ride up and over something large...a tree I'm sure! We got over that unscathed and set the anchor, rafting with our buddy boats. That evening was a blast! Dinghy rides, bloody mary's, beer bongs, hammock time...all were part of the fun time!
We love Bashi Creek...DUM DA DA DUM!!!
Things were about to get exciting!! The next morning, as Ben was making the 180 degree turn in the VERY skinny creek, we went over that same darn tree. All seemed OK until I felt a bit of a thud and we knew we hit something. Oh my! Call our buddy boats as we are stuck!! They start coming back as my sexy captain maneuvers the boat just right and gets us off the tree and out of that creek. But now, the damage assessment...All seemed good with the hull, no water coming in (thankfully we have a full keel). When we got on the river, we ran the boat up to 2200rpm (we have been traveling at 1400rpm) to check for any vibration, which would mean we hurt a prop. All seemed to be ok. Ben checked temps on the transmission, everything was spot on! So we have to wait to get somewhere for Ben to either dive to check or wait until we get to Mobile in a few days.
Bashi Creek was a beautiful, peaceful and a fun anchorage. But, also scary, frustrating and most likely expensive (depends on our prop damage). We would recommend this lovely spot, just don't go too far past the boat ramp!!!
We are 145 miles from the Gulf!!!

We were able to see water plunging over a spillway and flowing down over rock ledges while in the lock.
