New Jersey

Cape May, New Jersey is a much bigger town than we have been experiencing, and it is a popular vacation spot. It is actually on the Jersey Shore, but nothing like what you see on MTV, no Snookie sightings! We didn't see much of town, but what we did see was lots of traffic and people and sport fish boats.
This is just one of many marinas filled with sport fish boats
We traveled 60 miles racing to beat a storm. Thankfully we only had a bit of rain and were able to keep out of the storms path.

We have been in small town after small town for months now (Annapolis was the largest town in months), and we have loved it! Or have we just gotten used to the slower pace, the friendlier townsfolk and the history of each of these towns?

There are many positives to larger towns, one being variety of good food, which is a huge bonus for us. We were within walking distance to dining and shopping. Right outside the parking lot to the marina stands The Lobster House, a conglomerate of 5 different offerings of food from a seafood market to an old supper club restaurant. Needless to say, Ben and I ate our way through The Lobster House.

On our walk into town, we stumbled upon a festival and a Hops one to boot!! Fun times listening to live music, people watching, sampling the variety of hops, and of course eating!!

I'm still not sure if I can say I love bigger towns, but I can say I really like stopping in these bigger towns and we are taking advantage of all they offer!
Our gloomy looking day, it was foggy and misty.

The locals recommended Lucky Bones, it did not disappoint. The mussels were awesome and my pizza was very good...thin, crispy, crust.

This town has a lot of offerings, this was half of it
Hops festival!
Bacon and beer...perfect combination.

We are in Delaware!

We enjoyed a 42 mile run to Delaware City, Delaware. We traveled on the C&D canal (14 miles long), the Chesapeake and Delaware canal, which connects the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware River. The C&D is a shipping canal used by barges loaded with cargo mainly to and from the ports of Delaware River and Baltimore. We were told that traveling the canal during the week was bad since barge traffic would be busy. We saw one lonely barge traversing the C&D and we waved. I think after seeing 16 tows/barges in one day while traveling on the Mississippi River we are not fazed too much!

The one barge we saw
It's crazy we were in Maryland yesterday, Delaware today and our next stop will be in New Jersey! Our plan is to stay one night here at the Delaware City Marina but we have to watch weather as we will be crossing the Delaware bay which can get rough with the right winds. We have one more stop before we have to cross the bay, those marinas charge a bit more than here in Delaware City. Since we do not have a schedule to uphold, we will take advantage of this quaint small town, holding tight here until we see a good weather window. No one is complaining as the town has several restaurants, a seafood market, bars and very friendly staff here at the marina. We even took a ferry over to Fort Delaware which is a union harbor defense facility dating back to the 1850's. It once housed confederate prisoners of war. Visitors to the fort get to experience how things were back in the day with actors in character depicting time living at the fort.

There's no way I could do this job, these are some brave men!

Worton Creek & a visit to the hospital

Gorgeous sunset in Chestertown, MD
We only traveled 30 miles, to meet back up with Bob and Liz, at a small marina called Worton Creek, in a small town called Chestertown, MD. Bob and Liz wanted to look at a boat for sale so we joined them. What ended up happening is that we had to stay for 5 days because this is where Ben had to be admitted into the hospital for vertigo.
What a gem we found with this marina. It had a wonderful pool, a great little restaurant, and even better...great people. The wonderful staff helped get us to and from the hospital, they let me borrow their personal car to go back and forth and get some groceries since we were going to be there longer than anticipated. The many locals shared their experiences with the upcoming travels we had and all were concerned with how Ben was recovering. Small town America at its finest. We could not have been any more blessed to be in this marina when the s#%& hit the fan! We will be forever thankful for the support of our friends and the new friends we have met!

Out for a dinghy ride...this is the day before Ben had his bout with vertigo
The fleet of fisherman (actually called watermen here) docked at Worton Creek. We stalked them daily to see what the catch of the day was. Mostly eel (sent overseas) and some crab and a mussel of some sort.
This wonderful man, Owen a waterman, took us to the local fish market where he sells his crabs for us to get a dozen steamed crab! Amazing!
Clark's Seafood, check out the steamer barrels...all were hard at work this day.
Dinner out with Bob and Liz...minus Ben...he was in the hospital.
Two days after being released from the hospital, I have my Benjamin back!

We are sitting on the front porch of the restaurant enjoying a drink while Crocket is waiting for us to throw his toy for the thousandth time!
