Day 13: Munising, MI - Pictured Rocks

Sawyer going for a dinghy ride
Our run to Munising was just under four hours. We had a great day on the water enjoying the beautiful shoreline of the sandstone cliffs. We stayed at the municipal marina and were very happy to see a large grass area for Sawyer to run crazy dog. Sawyer met several puppies while here, he loved it!

Puppy playtime!
The town of Munising is full of shops, stores, ice cream and restaurants/food. It is much busier here than what we've experienced in a while. First things first though...we had to devour a couple tacos (while my jam is pizza, Ben is a sucker for Mexican food), I hit the grocery store stocking up on a few needed items, and then we all hopped on our dinghy to get up close to the Pictured Rocks.

In town just a bit
Early morning shot of the site of the cruise boats that take visitors out to see Pictured Rocks
Pictured Rocks are nearly 15 miles of sandstone cliffs that reach up to 200 feet above water. The colors in the cliffs are created by minerals in the rock when groundwater leaches out of the rock and evaporates, leaving streaks of red (iron), black/white (manganese), yellow/brown (limonite), pink-green (copper). It was breathtaking!

The water looks like we are in the Carribean...this is 13 feet deep here!

  1. I was born in Marquette and visited summers pretty much my whole life. I finally took a pictured rocks boat cruise a few years ago. It is absolutely stunning scenery. I would love to be able to get close on a dinghy!

  2. Munising is my hometown. I established the child care center with large murals on main street. 5 years ago I moved to the Milwaukee area. Miss this place, thank you for the beautiful photo tour.
